Juan Martin’s Musica Alhambra

Acelebrated virtuoso of the flamenco guitar who has been voted one of the topthree guitarists in the world by US magazine Guitar Player, Juan Martín learned his art in the land of itsorigin, Andalucia in southern Spain. Flamencois immediately associated with Spain but it took many influences from placesmuch further away to form the music that emerged in Andalucia some 200 yearsago. In keeping with this cosmopolitanspirit, Martin brings to the final night of the Eastbourne Festival, musiciansand performers not only from his native Spain but from India, Greece, Irelandand the Lebanon, for his celebrated Musica Alhambra show.

The daughter of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth doesn’t confine herselfto singing jazz. She is gracefully atease in folk music, as well as being an imaginative interpreter of the blues. She is, without doubt, one of our finestsingers regardless of category, and has probably the most flexible andexpressive voice of her generation. Recent recordings have been made with Elvis Costello, Sting and Paul McCartney,and she has recently shared the stage with Courtney Pine at the Royal FestivalHall. Jacqui comes to the EastbourneFestival with a full song book, some of her own songs, some standards, and someyou’ll have heard before, by Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald,Stevie Wonder, James Taylor and Paul Simon.

FromDurban in KwaZulu Natal to the world's stage, ZULU is a company of young Zulusingers and dancers who rekindle their culture and heritage and deliver a headymix of African harmonies (traditional songs as well as Afro-Gospel) withdrum-rhythms and high-energy, athletic dance. Festival favourites, they hit national TV in the UK and in South Africawhen performing for the first officially sanctioned Mandela Day at the BritishMuseum in July 2010. Hello and welcome to the shiny new face of the Eastbourne Festival blog. We're feeling excited about next years Festival and we hope that you will too when you read what’s in store for Festival 2012. We'll be posting regularly during the weeks running up to next year's festival, so be sure to visit to keep up with the latest news, you will be able to hear more from the musicians, artists and performers taking part and find out about getting involved yourself.

There are already lots of exciting events registered to take place in Festival 2012, from one off pop up events, psychedelic fringe 'happenings' and burlesque evenings to live music, open houses and stand-up comedy, but there is still room for lots more.

Plans for the 2012 festival are now well under way, with the programme of events looking to be even more exciting than last year. The festival programme will feature, amongst many others:

Fringe 2012 so far:

The Happening: for the second year running The Happening will once again entertain & bemuse us with its exploration of eclectic underground art forms which combine mixed media entertainment, live performance art & music.
The Grand Éclair: for one afternoon only this pop up event will be making its début appearance with a bijou & intimate Parisian inspired afternoon tea. Served in a decadent, velvet festooned, tiny Raj Marquee. Each 60 minute experience includes tea & cakes, static art plus a live tableau vivant or a Parisian inspired chanteuse. Limited tickets for scheduled viewing, each ticket is valid for 60 minuets.
Streets of Eastbourne: Following the success of the 2011 festival launch event, this year’s event will host not one but two stages showcasing a variety of performances including music, dance, theatre, poetry & story telling ditties; plus street dance, hoopla & poi performances & workshops. A vibrant street market will meander along the high street linking the two performance stages. There will also be an information stall where you can pick up your festival brochures or book tickets for some of the festival events.
Boudoir Burlesque: Another festival regular, the Boudoir Burlesque team will once again showcase the “Boudoir Belles” & the town’s favourite darlings “The Pretty Little Horse Breakers”, who will be performing their 2012 selection of beautifully choreographed routines before they head off into the sunset to perform on the summer festival circuit. Eagerly awaited by the ladies a very special appearance by “The Chaps” an all male cheeky burlesque routine.
Boudoir Burlesque will present live music & in house DJs dropping quality tunes till the wee hours. If this was not enough, there will be a mini burlesque boutique & a burlesque inspired photo booth & costume area where you & your friends can immortalise yourselves as dandies or burlesque beauties! A professional photographer will shoot & print your photo there & then for a suggested donation per head, proceeds of which will go to Breast Cancer Awareness.
Also in support of this charity some beautiful ladies will be circulating the venue peddling moustaches of a certain distinction & garters to be worn above the knee! Please give generously.

Hot off the press! Copies of the Festival brochure are available NOW at venues around the town. This years fab full colour brochure gives details of an amazing range of music, literature, theatre, comedy and arts events, as well as workshops and community arts events for kids and adults.

Brochures have been distributed to shops, cafes, bars, hairdressers, supermarkets and other venues around the town. Look out for your copy now. The Big Sleep is the Festival Information Centre this year, so if you can't find a brochure in your neighbourhood, why not pick one up from The Big Sleep (on the seafront, opposite the Wish Tower). Alternatively you can download a copy from the Festival website www.eastbournefestival.co.uk.

BRIGHTON UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING EASTBOURNE FESTIVAL 2009!

Staff and students from the University of Brighton BA Events Management and Events Marketing courses are providing welcome support to Eastbourne Festival for 2009. Student volunteer, Louise Dobson, is the Festival's Press Officer and senior lecturer, Jayne Luscombe is overseeing the new Friends of Eastbourne Festival scheme. Festival Director, Judith said, "The Directors of Eastbourne Festival are very pleased to be working with staff and students from the University of Brighton. It's great to have the support of this team of experienced staff and committed student volunteers. Their input is greatly valued both for it's practical contribution and as an endorsement of the Festival and their belief in its potential."

FESTIVAL 2009 FIRST EVENTS PLANNED

Plans for the 2009 festival are now well under way, with the programme of events looking to be even more exciting than last year. The festival programme will feature:

Eastbourne Festival Live: popular live music at The Winter Gardens, last years line-up featured top acts such as Pendulum, Jack Penate, Radio One’s Zane Lowe and Babyshambles. This year’s line-up to be released soon!
Polish Arts Events: The idea is to create a ‘Poland-by-the-sea’ (Polska nad morzem) through a multi-media exhibition of photos, interviews, text and portraits of Polish people living and working in Eastbourne and the surrounding area.
Artists Open Houses Event: This year’s festival will again see local artists opening up their studios and houses for the public to view work as well as see the space in which it is produced.
Redoubt Events: The Redoubt Fortress is to become a ‘hub’ for festival activities including community activities and workshops, performance and exciting new site specific work and installation by the Blue Monkey artists and invited guest artists from across Sussex.
Towner Gallery to show local work: The new Towner Gallery has invited East Sussex based artists to propose subtle, yet interesting, “interventions” for the public non-gallery spaces for the duration of the festival.

Plans are now firmly in progress for Eastbourne Festival 2009!

The Eastbourne Festival Community Interest Company are seeking major funding towards next year’s Festival from national organisations, however it will also very much welcome involvement from local businesses.

For £150 companies can become ‘Commercial Founding Sponsors’ with their company logo on the ‘Sponsors’ page of the Festival website, and a link to their main site together with a company logo on the sponsors’ page of the main Festival brochure.

Further sponsorship opportunities will be available for individually negotiated high profile packages including sponsorship of event banners, single named sponsorship of specific events and packages specially tailored to fit individual sponsor’s needs, such as the provision of services up to an agreed value.

EASTBOURNE FESTIVAL 2009 WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 11th - 26th APRIL 2009. A new Eastbourne Festival Community Interest Company has been formed to organize and promote an Eastbourne Festival for 2009 and future years. Plans are already under way to build upon the success of the 2008 Eastbourne Festival.

During March 2008 over 150 Festival events including music, dance, literature and artists Open Houses were held at venues across the town. Organisers were pleased and encouraged by the number of visitors supporting events and the huge enthusiasm for the Festival.

Organisers of Eastbourne Festival 2009 are committed to promoting excellence, diversity and imaginative interaction across artforms and will encourage the development of a broad programme of traditional, contemporary and experimental events for future Festivals.
